The city of Sozopol was founded on the peninsula Skamni many centuries ago. High rocky coast protected it from high waves and pirate raids. The city was surrounded by a fortified wall. A part of it is preserved until today and can be seen at the entrance to the Old Town. The modern name of the city of Sozopol was given to it back in the Middle Ages. It was a powerful, economically strong city-state. Coins were found during the archaeological excavations here. Old Town is a place where old wooden houses are well-preserved. Churches make the basic composition of landscapes of the Old Town. The newer part of Sozopol is full of comfortable hotels and coastal restaurants attracting people with their aromas, music and design. Nowadays Sozopol is a town of artists, fishermen, and, of course, tourists.
